Update latest from Coalition to Preserve Community fighting Columbia University big time abuser of eminent domain -- C.U. promised jobs - where are the jobs?
To members of the Coalition to Preserve Community and others
interested: Sunday, March 6, 2011
(1) The CPC will have a demonstration outside of the Columbia
“Employment Center” next Tuesday, 3/8/11, from 4 to 6pm. Please come
and join us. We will highlight the failure of Columbia to live up to
its agreements. With over 50 percent of Harlem’s black males jobless,
and the ongoing job displacement in the expansion area at full force –
Floridita Restaurant being stuck in an asbestos ridden “new home” and
unable to move in, and its 40 Hispanic workers unemployed - CU
continues to bulldoze its way. COME OUT AND JOIN OUR PROTEST. Our flyer
is pasted in below in English and Spanish, along with the press release.
(2) The Mirabal Sisters will have a bus going to Albany on Wednesday to
lobby for rent regulation protections. You can call them at 212
234-3002 for more info.
(3) There will be a panel discussion on the Columbia Expansion at the
Left Forum conference * at Pace University, on Sunday, 10 AM to 11:50
AM, March 20. It is entitled “Barbarians at the Gate: Columbia
University's Land Grab in Harlem” ROOM: E321, L. Panel Session
5—Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. Nellie Hester Bailey—Coalition to
Preserve Community and Harlem Tenants Council will be the moderator.
FOR MORE INFO, email Ms. Bailey at: nelliehester@yahoo.com
*(the Left Forum faces costs involved with putting on this event so
there is an entrance charge, but Ms. Bailey can provide more info on
this)

Greetings,
We would like to share this video with you. As you can see, in this
march against displacement, that we held in our East Harlem
neighborhood, Council Member Melissa Mark Viverito sent her lackeys to
attack our community and to try to shut down our protest. They were not
successful. In fact, immediately after their attack we marched directly
to her luxury home and protested in front of her house.
Please circulate the video widely.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Fereidoon “Fred”
Danesh, a founding member of the CPC and the West Harlem Coalition, and
a member of Harlem Tenants Council and honorary member of the 55/69
Tiemann 550 Riverside Drive Tenants Alliance. Fred was one of the
principal advocates for the potential of new manufacturing concepts in
the 197 A community plan for Community Board 9. He was also a great
thinker developing anti-gentrification defenses. He loved to do the
grunge work of organizing, and was a polite guy with a sense of humor,
even when he was calmly tearing up the opposition’s BS. There will be a
memorial service for Fred on Saturday, March 26th from 2 to 4:30pm at
St. Mary’s Church. All welcome.
